Midnattsol
A Painting Expedition in Arctic Norway. 2011.
I spent five weeks of summer in the small coastal village of Hamarøy, above the Arctic Circle, living simply and keeping odd hours. I began the majority of the paintings by venturing out into the landscape with my paint box and supplies, scoping out resting places and painting places. I returned to complete the paintings in my new “studio,” an elementary school classroom with plenty of natural light and a big green chalkboard. When I would leave my studio late at night, the Midnattsol illuminated the mountaintops in a ridiculously romantic way.
