Curriculum Design
I introduced HIP (High Intensity Practice) Drawing into the ninth and tenth grade art curriculum at Avenues São Paulo. It was informed by the HIP Writing routines that students were already accustomed to and grew out of the need to provide more structure to class discussion. HIP Drawing is a daily sketchbook practice that gives students the opportunity to build confidence in observational drawing, while taking the time to look closely and think deeply as they draw. After drawing, students are asked to respond to written prompts about what they notice and wonder and are asked questions that connect to relevant themes. HIP Drawing is not just a creative drawing warm up, it's a conversation starter that makes space for student voice and thoughtful discussion and provides opportunities for students to learn how to listen and build upon the ideas of others.
